Owning a Racing Greyhound
Begin your racing greyhound ownership career from as little as £350!
Owning a racing greyhound is an exhilarating experience and the excitement levels only multiply when your greyhound is first to cross the finish line. There’s nothing like that winning feeling, especially when you get your photo taken on the winner’s podium!
The thought of owning one of nature’s ultimate racing machines appeals to many after a trip to their local greyhound track. There are thousands of owners across our sport, many of whom have been involved for generations. A greyhound can cost anything from £500 for a low-grade runner to over £30,000 for a top-class performer and anything in between, so the choices are endless.
There are several ways to buy a greyhound but we recommend that, in the first instance, you talk to one of the staff based here at Michelle Brown Greyhounds. We have many decades of combined experience looking after greyhounds and we can give you the lowdown on what it’s like to own one of these beautiful animals, and how we could look after them for you.
Secondly, we suggest that you read up on the protocols of becoming the owner of a racing greyhound. As with the ownership of all animals there are certain moral and financial obligations. As a greyhound owner you will have various responsibilities including being registered. You can find more details about your obligations at the Greyhound Board of Great Britain where you’ll also find plenty of resources and information that’s invaluable to new and prospective owners.
If you think you’d like to have a vested interest in our wonderful sport and enjoy the social opportunities that it can provide but feel the commitment to full ownership of a racing greyhound is perhaps a step too far, then syndication or part-ownership is always an option.
Full ownership, part-ownership, or syndicate?
You can buy a greyhound outright as a sole owner or you can buy one with up to three friends as a partnership, with each owner having their names on the race card.
You could also consider becoming part of a syndicate. You still get all the fun of ownership, but you can spread the costs while also getting to share the love of the sport with your fellow syndicate members. It’s also the perfect way to meet new people and create friendships that can last a lifetime!
Syndicates are for groups of five or more people who are given a collective name and who all co-own a greyhound. For many, it is their first route into ownership.
How does a greyhound syndicate work?
Being a member of a greyhound syndicate can cost as little or as much as you wish. It works like this:
- You buy one or more shares in a dog, which can cost from as little as £200 per share
- You add on the annual cost of kennelling fees (usually paid in advance)
- You are now a greyhound owner!
As an owner when you kennel your dog with us then you can visit every Sunday. This is when you can spend time with your dog, walking them, chatting with other owners, our staff and trainers, get updates on their progress and discuss the plan for their next race!
There are lots of companies offering greyhound syndication opportunities so if you’d like to know more about owning one of the animal kingdom’s finest athletes then talk to us.
